Vision
To provide a strong foundation in the concepts of animal structure, classification, function and behavior and to inculcate practical skills and knowledge of biology of animals.
About the Department:
The Department has well equipped laboratories with Autoclave, Compound Microscopes, Microtome, Oven and Dissecting Microscope etc.
The Department has a collection of various preserved animals (Vertebrates & Invertebrates) and preserved plants like Algae, Bryophytes, Fungi, Lichens, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes, Ferns & Angiosperms.
The department also has the Botanical Garden spread over ample space. Special attractions in the garden are varieties of Ashavagandha, Tulsi, Neem, Haldi, Amla, Curry Patta, Rose, Guava, Arjuna, Giloe, Kikar etc. The Botanical Garden served as the repository of source material for Botanical studies, is also geared to cater to the dire need of conserving & enriching plant bio-diversity through exchange of plant & seeds.

Workshop on “Introduction to Apiculture: The Art and Science of Beekeeping”.(18.02.25)
Eco Club of DAV College Bathinda under Environment Education Programme organized an engaging and informative workshop titled “Introduction to Apiculture: The Art and Science of Beekeeping” in collaboration with Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana on February 18, 2025. The event was catalyzed and supported by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology. As many as 78 students were benefited with this workshop. The coordinators of the workshop Dr. Ranjeet Singh and Dr. Paramjeet Kaur alongwith Prof. Kuldeep Singh and Prof. Eshu accompanied the students.
The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the crucial role of bees in agriculture and ecosystems, as well as to provide insights into the technical and practical aspects of beekeeping. The workshop featured a series of expert-led sessions, with guest speakers from Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana sharing insights on bee biology, sustainable farming practices, and the role of bees in pollination and ecosystem health.
The first lecture was enunciated by Dr. Bharathi Mohindru on “Bee Colony Organization and Social Structure” providing a detailed exploration of the social structure and behavior of bees. She focused on the intricate roles within a bee colony, including the functions of the queen, worker bees, and drones. Participants were introduced to the complex communication systems of bees and the essential cooperation required to maintain a healthy colony.
The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Jaspal Singh on “Economic Potential of Beekeeping” who highlighted about the economic potential of apiculture as a viable business opportunity that offers diverse income streams, including honey production, pollination services, bee-related products (e.g., beeswax, propolis), decline in bee populations and its environmental consequences.
The third session was convened by Dr. Amit Choudhary on “Beekeeping Tools and Equipment” aiming to provide participants with essential knowledge about the tools required for successful beekeeping. The session covered an array of beekeeping tools, including hives, frames, smokers, protective gear, etc. and provided hands-on demonstrations on the proper use and maintenance of these tools to ensure the health and productivity of bee colonies.
The fourth session included hands-on demonstrations activities and live demonstrations, allowing participants to gain practical knowledge and experience in handling bees and maintaining hives.
The event concluded with a discussion session, where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about beekeeping challenges and solutions. Organizers encouraged attendees to explore opportunities in beekeeping as a viable and rewarding career. The organizers are hopeful that this workshop will inspire a new generation of beekeepers and contribute to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.
The Principal of the college, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma applauded the efforts of Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Eco Club Coordinator and Dr. Paramjeet Kaur for organizing the workshop. He said that the workshop offers valuable insight into a vital agricultural practice that not only supports biodiversity but also promotes sustainable farming.
DAV College Bathinda organizes “Compost Distribution Drive”. (21.01.2025)
Eco Club of DAV College Bathinda, under the aegis of ‘Green Campaign’ of Punjab Government organised a “Compost Distribution Drive” in collaboration with Municipal Corporation Bathinda and distributed compost (green manure) to the members of Senior Citizen Brotherhood Society, Bathinda and the staff members of DAV College Bathinda.
Prof. Parveen Kumar, Vice-Principal and Dr. Satish Grover, Registrar welcomed the team of Municipal Corporation Bathinda.
Green Campaign Programme is an initiative taken by Dr. Amandeep Kaur, under the guidance of Punjab Government in which 03 compost pits are maintained inside the campus of DAV College, Bathinda. The Green Waste is converted into Green Gold in the form of manure which helps in improving the environmental sustainability and maintaining the tradition of Zero Waste in the campus.
The stage was conducted by Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Eco Club Coordinator. He mentioned that the word green symbolizes plants and peace. Further, he mentioned that the dead parts of plants are used for making green manure. He emphasized that Municipal Corporation Bathinda, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology encouraged the Eco Club for utilization of plant waste in the college campus.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma applauded the initiatives undertaken by the members of Eco Club Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Dr. Paramjeet Kaur, Prof. Ramil Gupta and Prof. Nirmal Singh for their enormous and qualitative efforts for the cause of sustainable environment.

Dr. Ranjeet Singh from the Department of Botany, DAV College Bathinda delivers a guest lecture on “Mushroom Cultivation: A sustainable approach to future agriculture” at Govt. Brijindra College Faridkot. After receiving a warm welcome, he explained about the edible and poisonous mushrooms. He mentioned that mushrooms are a good source of proteins, vitamins, minerals and low in fat content. Further, he elaborated the medicinal importance of mushrooms and stated that mushrooms support immune system and heart health, possess antioxidants which are responsible for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects, anti-inflammatory effects, controls blood sugar level, etc. He also briefed about identification of poisonous mushrooms like Amanita, Galerina, Cortinarius, etc. and toxins present in these mushrooms. He described the morphology, ecology, habitat and economic uses of common edible mushrooms such as Volvariella volvacea, Pleurotus citrinopileatus and Agaricus bisporus. Futher, he mentioned about the infrastructure required for mushroom cultivation like substrates, polythene bags, cultivation vessels, inoculation loops, stoves, sieves, mushroom racks and thatched house. He also explicated about the preparation of spawn and mushroom beds. He delineated about the low-cost technology for mushroom cultivation which is an important approach for small-scale farmers, urban gardeners, or hobbyists who want to grow mushrooms without a significant financial investment. Composting technology, harvesting, storage and marketing of mushrooms were also discussed in the lecture. The innovations and future prospects of cultivation were also discussed in the lecture.
Around 50 students of the Department of Biology were benefitted with the informative and scholarly lecture.

An eminent Professor Dr. Ranjeet Singh from the Department of Botany, DAV College Bathinda delivers a scholarly lecture on “Unraveling Power of Proteins: Innovations and Future Prospects” at Baba Farid College, Deon. Afer receiving a warm welcome, he explained about the sources, structure, types and functions of proteins. He mentioned that Protein is a part of every cell in the body and is a major component of the skin, muscle, bone, organs, hair, and nails. It helps in repair and build body tissues, drives metabolic reactions, maintains pH and fluid balance, keeps the immune system strong, transports and stores nutrients, act as an energy source. He also delineated about the structure, classification, properties and metabolism of amino acids. He described about the conversion of amino acids to ammonia, toxicity of ammonia regarding symptoms transport of ammonia from various tissues to the liver and detoxification of ammonia through urea cycle. He also explained about genetic disorders of urea cycle that could be due to defects in the genes coding for proteins function in metabolism. The innovations and future prospects of proteins were also discussed in the lecture.
Around 70 students of the Department of Paramedical Sciences were benefitted with the informative and scholarly lecture.

DAV College Bathinda Organized Mutual-Induction Program of B.Sc. Students through Experiments and Demonstrations in Sciences. (16 Sep., 2023)
Departments of Physics, Botany, and Zoology of DAV College, Bathinda ignited the flames of scientific curiosity through an enthralling competition on Experiments & Demonstrations in Sciences. This event, held under the auspices of the DBT Star College Scheme, unfolded on the 16th of September, 2023, commencing at 10:00 AM, at the state-of-the-art Innovation-Hub located within the hallowed halls of the Physics Department.
Dr. Gurpreet Singh, the Head of Department for Physics spearheading the activity, welcomed a vibrant cohort of 62 budding scholars pursuing B.Sc. across Medical and Non-Medical disciplines. The competition served as an induction program for the fresh faces of B.Sc., seamlessly blending theory with hands-on practice.
The event witnessed participants from B.Sc.-II and IIIrd Years expertly crafting insightful presentations using PPTs, enlightening the newcomers with a vivid array of demonstrations, each anchored in fundamental scientific principles. Dr. Amar Santosh, the Head of Zoology Department, delivered a captivating exposition on the workings of the Digital Microscope.
Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, co-ordinator, DBT Star College Scheme deftly guided the proceedings, overseeing a diverse array of demonstrations encompassing topics as diverse as Conservation of Angular Momentum, Equilibrium, Plasma, Tesla Coil, Black Hole, Faraday Electromagnetic Shielding, Racing Track, Working Principle of Generator, Automatic Energy Saver, Total Internal Reflection Vortex Formation, Digital Microscope, and Detection of Blood Pressure.
During the tea break, students engaged in a fruitful exchange with Dr. Vikas Duggal regarding his recent research endeavor, conducted in tandem with B.Sc. scholars under the DBT-Star College Scheme. Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, the DBT Coordinator, illuminated the scheme’s overarching objectives.
Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma extended his congratulations to the departments for orchestrating this enlightening interdepartmental activity. He also unveiled plans for an upcoming mega science fair scheduled for the first week of October, 2023.
The eminent panel of judges, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann and Dr. Amar Santosh, meticulously assessed the teams, weighing their grasp of the demonstration’s underlying concepts and the level of participant involvement. In recognition of their efforts, certificates and accolades were conferred upon the victors.
Team No. 2 (Sarthik, Ramendra, Jasleen, Muskan) secured the coveted First Prize, with Team No. 8 (Aanjali Kumari, Maha Singh) clinching Second Prize, and Team No. 1 (Garima, Nikita, Sarita) securing the Third Prize. Teams No. 3 and 4 (Tanisha, Arshdeep Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Navnish Kaur, Nishtha) were lauded with Consolation Prizes.
In a concluding gesture, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann extended a vote of thanks, applauding the students for their indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to the spirit of scientific inquiry.
DAV COLLEGE BATHINDA CELEBRATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY (IDB)-2023 (27 May 2023)
The Departments of Botany, DAV College Bathinda celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)-2023 on the theme “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” on May 27, 2023. The event was organized in collaboration with Punjab Biodiversity Board (PBB) and sponsored by National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), Govt. of India. On this occasion, various events like extension lecture, tree plantation, photography competition and poster presentation were organized. The resource person Dr. Daizy Rani Batish, Professor Department of Botany, Punjab University Chandigarh was extended a warm welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Event Coordinator Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Head, Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh, Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta and Dr. Amandeep Kaur.
Dr. Daizy Rani Batish elucidated on scope of biodiversity, its principles and conservation practices of biodiversity. She stated that biological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms, but it also includes genetic differences within each species — for example, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock — and the variety of ecosystems (lakes, forest, deserts, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kind of interactions among their members (humans, plants, animals). She further stated that if we keep our biodiversity intact, it will help in maintaining the ecological balance.
Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked the resource person Dr. Daizy Rani Batish for making the youth aware of that how biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations. He appreciated the event coordinator Dr. Ranjeet Singh for organizing this event.

The Department of Zoology in collaboration with the Eco Club organized an extension lecture on “Anthropocene; A Misplaced Trust in Ecological Utopia” for B.Sc. students on April 25, 2023. The resource person on the occasion was Professor (Dr.) Himender Bharti (Director, Centre for Restoration of Ecosystem of Punjab & Former Head, Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University Patiala). The program was supported and funded by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) under the Environment Education Program. DAV College Bathinda Organises Molecular Lab Visit for B.Sc. Students (17 Oct 2022)
The Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a molecular Lab Visit to Central University of Punjab, Bathinda for B.Sc. Medical (III Year) students.
Integrating curriculum with the practical knowledge, the students were taken to the Central Instrumentation Lab and were demonstrated the functioning of the various lab instruments like PCR, DNA Sequencer, Flow Cytometer, Bioanalyzer, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR,600MHz), Powder X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD),Inductively coupled Plasma Mass spectrometer, Gas Chromatography, etc. Dr. Rabindra Kumar and Dr. Sumeer Razdan imparted valuable information on the working of different instruments used in the laboratory.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma appreciated the Dr. Amar Santosh (Head, Department of Zoology) and Dr. Kriti Gupta (Head, Department of Botany) for organizing this lab visit. He said that such lab visits impart hands on knowledge to the students and enhance their knowledge trajectories.

The Department of Botany of DAV College Bathinda organized a field trip to Bir Talab Zoo, Bathinda for the students of B.Sc.III (Medical) as a part of the curriculum.
Lecture on Biodiversity: Status & Conservation in India
The Departments of Botany and Zoology, DAV College Bathinda on the occasion of “International Biodiversity Day” organized a lecture on the topic, “Biodiversity: Status & Conservation in India”. The resource person on the occasion was Dr. Avneet Pal Singh (Department of Botany, Punjabi University Patiala).

National Science Day
The Departments of Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology) of DAV College Bathinda celebrated National Science Day on 2/03/2022 on the theme “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”. Financial Assistance for the event was provided by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCTSC) and Department of Science & Technology (DST) Govt. of India. On this occasion various events like lecture, slide show, Quiz Competition and Poster competition were organised.
Environmental Rangoli Competition
With an aim of bringing forth the creativity and making students environmentally aware, the Faculty of Sciences, DAV College Bathinda under the banner of DBT Star College Scheme organized an interdepartmental activity “Environmental Rangoli Making Competition” on November 25, 2021. The adjudicators for the event were Prof. Rajnish Kumar (Retd. Prof., Department of Botany, DAV College, Bathinda), Prof. I. K. Sukhija (Retd. Prof., Department of Zoology, DAV College, Bathinda) and Dr. Harjinder Singh Mann, Registrar and Associate Professor of Physics Department, Govt. Rajindra College, Bathinda). The competition witnessed an enthusiastic participation of 118 students from various schools and colleges of Bathinda city and nearby villages.

The Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a clinical Lab Visit for B.Sc. Medical (III Year) students on November 23, 2022 under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Kaur.
Knowledge Quest -2021
Under the DBT STAR College Scheme, Departments of Physics, Botany, and Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a quiz competition “Knowledge Quest” for science students on 10th March, 2021. The focus of this competition was on creating more awareness of science and technology and inculcating scientific temperament amongst the students.
One day workshop on “Bioinformatics: An Ocean of Opportunities to Leverage During Lockdown”
The Departments of Botany and Physics of DAV College Bathinda, organized a one day webinar on “Bioinformatics: An Ocean of Opportunities to Leverage During Lockdown” under DBT sponsored Star College Scheme. Dr. Felix Bast (Associate Professor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda) was the resource person on the occasion.
Clinical Lab Visit
The students of B.Sc. (Medical) II & III of DAV College, Bathinda were taken on a clinical lab visit to GEE ESS Laboratory Bathinda on March 09, 2020. Dr. Saran Pal imparted valuable information on the working of different instruments used in the laboratory and Mr. Paramjit demonstrated different types of blood and urine tests performed in the laboratory.

National Conference on “Emerging Scenario in Basic and Applied Sciences for Sustainable Development” was held on 5th April,2018. Dr. R.K. Kohli , vice-chancellor, Central University of Punjab,Bathinda was Keynote Speaker on the Occasion. Dr. Rohit Mehra , Professor, Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology(NIT), Jalandhar was Resource Person in the Conference.
